Batrep vs Crow Valley Crusaders

So another battle report, but this time myself and the eflling Alun took a wee trip down to the Crow Valley Crusaders where we challanged a couple of its members to a game of 40k! Shaun, whose Imperial Fists Contemptor has been featured on this very blog before, and Michael took up the challange. Just recently myself, and the other Chairman from the Welsh GCN clubs had a little meeting about more interclub gaming and events, and we've got some great ideas we're hoping to implment over the coming year. Byron, the GCN rep for Wales and also Chairman for the CVC guys has come up to the Reavers several times, so it was great to get down and play on away turf!

Shaun was using Imperial Fists, and Michael used Iron Hands tactics, although his marines were very red! It sort of looked like the Howling Griffons had curdled and split into two forces! I was using Krohmus Guard, while Alun had speedily built his latest purchases, and was able to field an all Dark Eldar force for the first time.

Mission was Crusade, 2k points per player so 8k altogether, 4 objectives with the diagonal deployment. Looking across the table we could see a lot of firepower and already I was worried about whether I had enough to send into them. Alun assured me his 10 or so dark lances would be fine so we set off with the first turn. Night Fighting in effect as Alun had a warlord trait to put in into effect.

Heres the deployment, the achilles worried me a little, although I didn't realise it had three multimeltas on it! Thunderfire cannon would hurt, especially as there were objectives and two FW Plasma predators could do a lot of damage to me.

First turn kicks off and I send a drop pod down in front of Mikes Land Raider Redeemer to try and blast it open with a meltagun. Which obviously I miss! Alun advances his raiders and ravagers forward but his fire only immobilises the land raider and takes another hull point off. Not good so far! My bikers advance around the flank, cautious of the contemptor there and my on foot tactical squad advance into the ruins towards the objective there. Aluns two venoms fly up the right flank to get into a position to assault next turn.

The CVC guys first turn proved devastating. Most of Aluns raiders or ravagers suffered horribly, either blowing up and taking a lot of the wyches away with the resulting explosions or losing weaponry or being immobilised. Not good for an army that needs to get across the board quickly! My drop pod and squad are wiped out from the redeemer and terminator fire. I roll for reserves and nothing comes on in the next turn!

Aluns flyers come on, and whittle down some of the squads in front of us. I advance my Land Raider and chapter master, chaplain and termies come out and charge the contemptor dread in their way. They blow him up, the explosion killing three of my terminators in the blast. Yep, another terrible armour roll for my terminators! Bikes advance a little more, Aluns survivors try to get into position to stay alive and the venoms unleash their Archons and incubi, who assault into a tactical squad butchering most and the terminator squad where their combat is a lot closer, a couple of termies die along with the incubi but the archon survives and fights on.

Shaun and Mikes turn and two Fireraptors enter play, yes two! These Fists termies come down too, and do a little damage before a well placed plasma cannon shot and some wyches sort them out.

The Fireraptors are deadly buggers fair play, being able to fire at four targets they annihilate Aluns two flyers and do more damage to Aluns surviving raiders, leaving alun looking very vulnerable. my tactical squad lose a couple more members due to thunderfire cannon fire, and the contemptor dread unsleashes Kheres assault cannon fire into the dark eldar killing even more.  Then my chapter master gets target. So much firepower butchers him, the chaplain and last two terminators. I had hoped they'd last longer but my dice rolling just isn't good!

My reserves come on, the tactical squad drop podding near the slightly forgotten about objective with the bikes moving up to support. The Stoemtalon flies in between the fireraptors into a position that it can't get shot by them next turn, crafty move I thought! I use the tactical doctine but completely forget to reroll ones, missing with both krak missiles this could have made a difference and I only take a hull point off and shake the crew. Its something though and helps an archon and incubi unit survive a little more in the next turn! Elsewhere fire proves to be fairly ineffective as we just don't have much left. In combat the other archon joins his beleagured general and wounds the chatper master, no easy thing! The other archon does die however, his shadowfield flickering and dying out.

Aluns army is finished off in this turn, and I curse the Dark Eldars fragile nature. And Aluns bad dice rolling haha. Shauns contemptor with powerfists comes hurtling through the ruins and charges into my bike squad, the gravguns firing but doing little but the storm talon does fly in from behind and takes a hull point off. The grav guns fire again and I manage to get the two sixes I need to finish it off and hopefully keep the objective on the left flank. My tactical squad on the other objective are barraged heavily by loads of fire and all members die leaving the objective free. Two Imperial Fists capture the middle objective after Aluns wyches were finished off and another Fists squad holds the other objective. I fire some kraks at the unit but the Chapter master takes the missiles which kill him, granting us an extra point.

The game ends and the score is 9-4 to the Crow Valley lads. Thats a generous result considering I had very little left and Alun was wiped off the table, but we had a great game and I hope the guys enjoyed! Those Fireraptors are crazy, and we just couldn't deal with the amount of firepower across the table from us. If Aluns dice were a little better in the first turn it could have been a lot closer, and he'd also forgotton about the bonus to jink saves from the night fighting which may have helped... although I doubt it! Tactically I made some mistakes during deployment. Putting the Crusader in the middle just invited firepower from all fronts, so when my Chapter Master came out he was right in the middle of everything and that was just daft! Fair play though Shaun and Michael played a great game and I hope we get to play them again to regain some pride and get some revenge!

Codex Inquisitor and Batrep vs Daemons

Can it truly be? Has the Kev of Immense Size managed to prise his filthy paws from writing up business stuff and off the black smooth plastic of the Xbox 360 controller? Yes he bloody has! Things have been a little hectic lately, and when I've had free time its either been spent on the streets of Los Santos or attempting to get a life's dream off the ground and into full blown mode. Before I get into a battle report though, a few things first!

A Better World opened up in Merthyr Tydfil (althought better known locally as Mordor Tydfil) in the last couple of weeks and is an amazing little gaming/comic book shop. Paul, the guy behind it all is also hoping to come to club soon to get into gaming, and we're only too happy to help. If you're in South Wales go visit!

This is also coming out in a little over a week, but why am I bothered about it? Well, conversion possibilities for a start! We've all seen in Blanchitsu the focus on Inquisitor style warbands (which I still think is some sort of marketing strategy for a possible Inquisitor boxed game) and I'm incredibly tempted to get this to be able to add Inquisitors and hopefully assassins into my Krohmus Guard.

So onto the MAIN EVENT OF THE EVENING!!!

In the red, blue, purple, black and white corner is the KROHMUS GUARD! In the... well, very odd entity of warp thats all over the shop, the EVIL DAEMONS OF ALUN THE ELF-RUFFIAN!!! Bit of a big game too, as we're both using 3000 points, yes, THREE THOUSAND! points playing the Big Guns Never Tire on a Vanguard deployment.

Alun won the dice roll and wanted me to set up and go first. I didn't have much terrain, so using the Techmarine with the thunderfire cannon I boosted the only ruins in my deployment zone and formed a strong firebase there with Devs, TF Cannon, Tactical Squad and the Scorpius Relic Whirlwind (proxying the normal WW as one, wanted to try it out) among these simple ruins. The Bikes set up on the dz edge, and the Vindicator covered my left flank.

Alun responded with plaguebearers on his objective, blood letter units in the centre, bloodthirster and juggernauts on my left flank. On my right flank behind a building was a Keeper of Secrets and a Daemon Prince. Finally Alun placed a soulgrinder in the middle. Ouch! Nightfighting for first turn!

Looking to get First Blood I bring a DP down and shred a bunch of bloodletters, but its not enough. Theres not a lot to happen due to nightfighting but I do take a hullpoint off the soulgrinder and stun it and also take a wound off the keeper of secrets. Finally the vindicator launchers a shell into the three juggernauts and kills two outright. Score! Aluns forces move up and he conjures some despicable spells upon himself, but thats about it for his first turn. Well, he does pretty much destroy my tactical squad with his Daemon Prince but thats to be expected!

In my next turn I launch more fire into the Daemonnic lines. Daemon Prince loses a couple of wounds, the BloodThirster is taken down to just two wounds by the gravguns on the bikers who then charge in, lose two of their number but finish him off. The Vindicator kills several of a bloodletter unit, the whirlwind finishes off the Soulgrinder after I rolled four hits, two sixes to penetrate then blowing it up with Alun failing his Invulnerable save. That thing scared me so to see it die was awesome! My Chapter Master and Daemon Prince do battle, I forget orbital bombardment AGAIN but do kill the beast even though I lose two wounds. Aluns reinforcements begin to appear, materialising all over to support his army.

The Lord of Change appears, and starts using its trickery. Luckily it cannot move and will be targeted next turn! Bloodletters spill into my second tactical squad in drop pod on the left flank, and I have 4 left. I do manage to whittle them down though so I may have a change. The last juggernaut exacts revenge against the vindicator by wrecking it and some daemonettes run onto the objective in the central position after appearing nearby. My response, as so often is, SHOOOOOOOOOT!!!!!

My biker captain charges into the last couple of bloodletters and instead of using the power axe I use his base initiative attacks to try and kill them... and he does! Last three members are saved. The other bikes spin around to kill th last juggernaut, and do so, the grav gun taking its toll on the red beast. Daemonettes and Terminators clash, with the daughters of Slaanesh gaining the upper hand. My Chapter Master wanders into the combat that now includes a keeper of secrets but is mortally wounded. The last termie breaks from combat and runs back 10". The Keeper of Secrets then attracts not handsome egotistical men or beautiful women, but bullets and laser beams. He soons slumps to the ground and disappears.

More Daemons appear but each is met with controlled bursts of assault cannon fire, frag missiles and bolter rounds as they're all cut down. Bikers move onto the central objevtive, giving me two while I'm able to finish off the plaguebearers thanks to the Thunderfire Cannon, two storm talons and the last three marines of the left flank drop pod unit. Theres another Daemon prince appearence who is brought down by two overwatching Krakmissiles, and the lone termie is able to deal with another lone daemonette in a slow combat. Horrors are dismantled by the Legion of the Damned, Whirlwind and tactical squad on my ruins and the battlefiel finally grows quiet.

The Krohmus Guard have wiped the Daemons from the battlefield. I'd somehow tabled Alun! Score wise its about 10-2, which clearly deserves a fistpump! No doubt what won it for me was target choice, making sure I brought down what was most lethal like the juggernauts, bloodthirster and Keeper of Secrets key targets. The Keeper of Secrets took a beating too, starting with an extra wound and having FnP made it a machine! The Whirlwind performed awesomely well, D3+1 shots if not moving was devastating, especially ST8ap3 blasts! The Thunderfire caused a lot of damage, as did my faith in boltguns. It was nice to have my dice perform reasonably well too, Aluns wasn't bad but mine were just much better! I'm sure there were plenty more moments that had us both laughing but my memory is horrific lately.

At club Jase has got himself X-wing so I'm hoping to try that out soon, otherwise I'll see what new conquests the Krohmus Guard can claim for the Imperium!

Saturday Salvo: Aint No Dice in Los Santos?

Lets not beat around the bush, this has taken up most of my time this week.

GTA V was released on Tuesday and I've actually been really enjoying it. Videogames have bored me a little over the last coupel of years but this has enough variety to keep me entertained. The little random events are great, theres a guy opposite Shandy Shores who had me in hysterics for ages... an old hick dancing to various country music and he never seems to stop. Classy game Rockstar... although I'm gutted the characterful manual has gone!

What else has been happening? Well the Gorgon is coming out!

This, THIS is beautiful. The way he links up with Fulgrim is lovely, but the amount of the little details in this guy is absolutely astounding. I'm kinda thinking FW should create some sort of Primarch Hit Squad for people who paint the Primarchs terrible, it just should not be allowed.

Personally hobby wise I've picked up a box of Sterguard and a box of Vanguard. Gonna create some honour guard out of the sternguard using some vanguard parts but also a new Chapter Master, as my current one has had his sword broken in two.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"

Not sure about the rest of the vanguard yet but I may even build and use them as vanguard, we shall see.

Also, matey Adam has sponsered a comptition on Eastern Fringe, go here to win some zombies by making a zombie! May have a go at entering myself if I can pull myself away from GTA... not an easy prospect! Battle report in the next couple of days, again against Alun and his crafty pointed ears but in a much larger 2500pt game... it was a wee brutal too! Anyways, thats it for this Saturday Salvo, what projects are you guys working on? Been torn away from your hobby desk to make millions in Los Santos? Tell me about it!

Horus Heresy Book II: Massacre

So book two of the Horus Heresy series is coming soon and it will contain rules for the Iron Hands, Night Lords, Salamanders and the Word Bearers. It also looks like it will be available in limited numbers at Games Day 2013, could this become a yearly ritual? It would make sense so, not only a good place for Forge World to talk about the newest releases but by making it available at Games Day will sell a lot of tickets as keen heresy enthusiasts look to lap up the latest release.

Fulgrim: High Res Image

Since the release of Angron, 40k and Heresy addicts have been awaiting the release of the next release in the line of Primarchs, Fulgrim. I thoroughly enjoyed The Emperors Children book, especially the relationship between Fulgrim and Ferrus Manus. With the Forge World open day we finally have a proper look at Fulgrim himself. I'd seen some posts on facebook but the second pic down was a smaller resolution, so if you open it up in a new tab/window you can see it in a nice high res format. Looks stunning I must say, and I may be tempted to pick him up!

I'm really digging the base too, like Angron its a little mini-diorama in itself. I'm curious as to whether they may do a 'duel' base for when they release the Iron Hands Primarch that makes it look like they're battling each other, would work well perhaps!

Heres a colour picture too!

A couple of other pictures I've seen from the FW open day, the Istvaan Massacre battle and also some new Mechanicum units...

Huge Game and Tabletop Day Update!

So its been a wee while, but I've been a busy chap! Had some work to do and other personal projects to get on so blogging took a wee backseat, but here we are on the cusp of a Tau release, and I'm zogging excited for it! Here though, is my main gaming activity from the week before and tabletop day! What? You don't know what tabletop day is? Pfft!

First of all, myself and Morgan decided to have a nice huge game of 40k, and in a small amount of time. Challange! Our armies are below! I believe we had 4500 each, would have been more but Morg forgot a few of his characters so some trimming was needed.

Heres the table before we deployed, nothing too fancy as we wanted plenty of room, but to still make us think tactics.

After a couple of turns, my flyers storm the board and cause trouble. Morg wastes almost an entire armies worth of shooting trying to take them out with no success!

Its a close game throughout, Land Raiders are blown up, characters kill the enemy and are in turn defeated in combat, it was immensely gratifying seeing so much on the table.

My terminators devoured a couple of grey hunters units, rhinos and a dread before they were finally stopped, and Morgan did eventually take out my Stormraven. Arjac was killed by my thunderhammer toting termies, but a huge bloodclaw pack were rampaging in my deployment zone. This was an epic game fair dues! We hurriedly counted the victory points to see who had won...

15-20 to Morgan, I had a feeling he had the edge but he insisted it was me who was winning, but what a game. We had so much fun playing this, my shooting edge wasn't quite enough as when Morgs wolves got into combat they were hard to stop, although I had some success in Morgs deployment too in combat. We both got to try units that don't get used much, Morgs bikers, and my librarian, who I really enjoyed using! I even remember to use his powers ha.

Now onto International Tabletop Gaming Day, held last Saturday. The day before Owain and Morgan came over to mine and brought some games with them... first up, Risk!

This edition was Space Risk, where even the moon is up for grabs by your troops. Morgan controlled the game for the first half, although my forces were still considerable Owain was banished to the moon, needing a specific card to be released and exact revenge. As myself and Morg built our forces up, he went to go onto a major offensive against me but I had a 'Cease Fire' card with prevented him from attacking me, score! I then went on the offensive and took over a lot of his countries. Owain however on the last turn took the initiative and invaded the Earth like the Red martian he is! He took over many of my countries, but I managed to fight back valiantly. The game ended, and we totted up the final scores....

I'd been pipped by one measely point! It was Give a Ginger a Hug Day also, but I wasn't so sure after that haha. It was a great game though, my first time playing Risk and hopefully not my last!

Next up, we played Chaos in the Old World. What a sexy board this is! Bam had arrived at this point, and we all fought for which Chaos god we would become. Morgan took on the mantle of Khorne, Owain as Papa Nurgle, Bam became Slaanish, and I sneakily became Tzeentch.

I started slowly, as Morgan and Owain battle for the lead. Bam stayed ahead of me for much of the game not far off the others. It finally occurred to me what I needed to do to win. In the last turn I ruined two areas and got enough turns on the dial to win. Unfortunately, so did everyone else. If everyone has a victory on the dials it would be judged on the victory points. We counted up and finally, I'd managed to jump ahead and steal it on the final turn in the name of Tzeentch! A great game, I really enjoyed how every Chaos God has to level up in different ways. Nurgle through corrupting towns, Slaanesh through corrupting the nobility, Khorne through butching the others, and Tzeentch through playing magic cards and warpstone tokens in each ot the towns. This is a great little game, and it makes me want to play the Horus Heresy game even more!

For now, thats it. I'll have another update detailing this weeks game, where me and Alun took on the benign Adam and Chris' Chaos forces. I've also been working on objective markers for the Tredegar Reavers first campaign day, where I designed the certificates and campaign pack while member Jacob came up with the story and rules. Should be a cracking day as I'll be using the new Tau! I've got a riptide ordered along with the codex, and hopefully I'll add a few more pieces too. Keep an eye out for those!

New FW Necron Release

I'll be the first to admit, I'm not a huge fan of Necrons. I can see the appeal, but its just not something that makes me look and want to collect them. Forge World have however released some new Necron bits that will most likely tie into the imminent release of the new Imperial Armour book. First up, is the realm of battle board featured in a past White Dwarf.

Now fair play, four of those slotted together looks pretty awesome, I'd love to battle em on there! I sort of reminds me of some of the Lizardmen temples that had been seen many moons ago in foreign Games Days and such. The other new release is the Night Shroud Bomber.

How much better does this look with the side blades? Such a better look than the normal variant, it almost looks like a weapon you'd expect to see on Stargate or some othe scifi adventure. I'd always disliked how the cockpit was open, so this is another aspect that holds much improvement in my eyes.

Well done FW, some likeable Necrons!

Abbadon and Loken... Thoughts.

So when I went to games day 2012, I was excited about seeing the first workings of Abbadon and Loken. Reading about their simmering rivalry was one of the highlights of a very good trilogy of books, I'm sure I'm not the only one! Well, Forgeworld have finally finished and released them! Without further ado, lets have a look!

So these guys on the display look great. There's interactivity between the characters, and the rubble looks pretty cool. Lost of nice little details there!

How awesome does Abbadon look? I can see people wanting this version with a bit of conversion (Daemon Weapon anyone) to use in their Chaos armies for 40k. The current model is in need of an update badly, and here it should be!
Now Loken. I'll be honest, I didn't see him like this when I read the book so I'm a tad disappointed. I thought he'd look a little more like this guy...

Yep, this Space Wolf Blood Claws sergeant artwork is awesome, and this is who I pictured when I read about Garviel Loken in the HH books. Not as feral looking as this, but similar spikey hair and a rough 'I don't take no shit' look on his face. What FW released though looks a lot more retained and well looked after. Its a great model, but when you picture something in your head its hard for anything to live upto it, and thats whats happened to me! Its a great set though, although £55? When you think Angron has 2.5 other marines on it, and looks like theres more resin on there... yet its a fiver cheaper! Hmm, odd I think.

What are your thoughts though ladies and gents?

Deathshroud Revealed

So Forge Worlds little bit of fun has finally been revealed.... and its just what we all thought.

The Deathshroud.

I believe these are the elite of the Deathguard, bodyguard of Mortarion, which could mean the Primarchy will be available soon too. Exciting times!  Here are a few of the images released by Forge World

I think they look pretty awesome, really want to see someone make a Typhus conversion using one of these as a base as I think theres the potential there for an amazing model.

What are your thoughts? Impressed? Disappointed?

Chaplain Kitbash.

Ah, Kitbashing. Worthy of a capital letter. I love Kitbashing me, my Librarian, Chapter Master and Master of the Forge all created through various kits. Well, seeing as my Chaplain was old and hidden under a couple of paint jobs, I decided that a new one was needed.... but where to start?

I began browsing Ebay for various bits. Theres some great sellers on there, and I found some great parts!

The head was donated by friend Bam from a Venerable Dread, the chest torso was an Iron Hands torso I thought looked cool, the Power First was from a Tartaros Terminator, and the Crozius was a combination of a DA Power Maul and a standard top. Standard Tactical Squad legs with some honours from the tactical sprue and also the attack bike sprue.

I'm quite happy with the pose, the idea being he's just finished his litanies and is pointing upwards as a symbol of the Emperor for all to see. Its not finished yet, he has no backpack and the wires need tidying up but he's about 80% done. Can't wait to use him in our all dayer... Which is SUNDAY!!!

The Squat and the Boarding Captain.

First of all, in case you read that title and hoped for some fan fiction where a Squat and an Imperial Freighter officer fall in love, you'll be more than a tad disappointed. As amazing as that story would be, this is about the limited edition Forge World Boarding Captain.... and a... Squat.

The Boarding Captain was obtained by a swap with one of the greatest examples of gentlemen I have ever known, and someone I've mentioned before on this very blog. You may remember a James, who, after taking time out of sculpting to chat to an over-enthusiastic giant from Wales and gave me a sculpted Empire Elector Count head he'd done. We kept in touch, and he happened to mention if I'd picked a certain something up this year at Games Day, I of course did, so he asked if he could buy or swap... and mentioned the Boarding Captain. I knew he was a pretty cool model so happily agreed. A few days later this guy pops up in the post! I've only now got to painting him, as I wasn't sure whether to use him for my chapter or not...

But then I couldn't resist. I mean, look at the model, he's stunning! The Storm Shield I actually looked into getting when kitbashing my Chapter Master together, but glad I didn't cause it looks superb on this guy. You may have noticed he has an old Mk V Jump Pack. This was originally intended for a Chaplain I'm working on, but then put it on this guy and thought it looked too good not too! I'll hopefully be able to magnetise it so I can switch with his regular backpack if needed. But I'm pretty happy with how he's looking so far! Not finished yet, as I need to blend a couple of bits together a little more and the base needs finishing, but so far so good!

Next...

You may or may not have seen some fluff I'd created for my chapter in which they fight off a Chaos Warband from an unknown planet, and find that it is inhabited with a small clan of Squats. They decide to take them to Mars where a great sense of machinery would help the Adeptus Mechanicus. Some Squat lobbied that they should be able to fulfil tradition and pay a debt to my Evandalists and help them, whether it be as crew to the battle barges or elsewhere. I wanted to include a couple in my force, and began to look at ways to do so.

One obvious thought was as a Techmarine. I picked up a techpriest squat from Ebay, but could'nt decide on how best to use him. So thoughts turned elsewhere, then inspiration struck during a battle. A few months back I'd had a go at using the rules for Telion, and really enjoyed what he did. Hes a great little upgrade for snipers, especially if you really need that Rocket Launcher to hit a vehicle or to try and take out those special weapon squad members! So, what about a Squat version of Telion? I looked through some of the back catalogues of Squats, and they all looked a little too old school to fit in my force. Then I saw the one! RATLINGS!!!

And here he is. I picked this guy up on Ebay, and was able to some sort of success, sculpt a beard on him to make him more Squat-like. I think it looks pretty good! He still needs a little work on him, but he's at the point where I can try and get some other stuff done and he looks alright. Pretty chuffed with the guy! I'm gonna make up some fluff for him and give him a name, but I can't wait to field him with my Scout snipers, who I need to add I also have to finish! Bad habit this not getting things done malarky.

So thats what I've been doing last few days, I've got a couple of bits coming to sort out my two Chaplains, the biker and foot ones, and then it'll be a case of painting as much as I can before the all dayer in just over a weeks time. Cannae wait!
